Chapter four is on the other desk.

A doctoral candidate writes with both hands on the keyboard, one Space per chapter, and forty PDFs that all have the same icon. The paper he needs is always on the other Space.

The desk

Jonas is eighteen months into a thesis on sleep and memory consolidation. He writes in Scrivener, cites from Zotero, and reads in Preview. Forty-odd PDFs open at once, because closing one means finding it again. Each chapter has its own macOS Space with its own set of papers. Safari holds the journal pages he has not saved yet. Both hands are on the keyboard from nine until the library closes.

The problem

Every PDF is a Preview window with the same icon. Cmd-` walks them one at a time in an order that is not the order he remembers. The paper he wants is usually on the Space for a different chapter, where Cmd-` cannot see it. He was using Mission Control and reading titles off stamps, or Spotlight to reopen a file that was already open somewhere.

What changed

The VortexFlow spiral opens from ⌃⌥Space; his hands never leave the row. The writing loop, draft, source, draft, is a hold-and-release, because the previous window is preselected whichever Space it lives on. For anything else he types a word from the title. hippo finds every paper with "hippocampal" in its name across all four Spaces, most recently read first. zot is Zotero. scriv is the draft.

He chose List for the layout so the cards show previews: at forty PDFs, a glimpse of the first page tells apart two papers by the same lab faster than their titles do. That meant granting Screen Recording, which on his own laptop he was happy to do. When he is in the library on the shared screen, the overlay is set to stay out of screenshots and recordings.

Zotero and the university library proxy are pinned, so a new citation is one card away. Arrow keys walk the list, Return commits, Escape puts it down.

The setup

Trigger
⌃⌥Space. No mouse on the library desk most days; a trackpad the rest of the time.
Layout
List with previews. Screen Recording granted on a personal machine.
Pins
Zotero (app) · Library proxy (link) · Scrivener (app)
Spaces
One per chapter; the spiral sees all of them, and Move to Display puts a paper on the monitor at home.

What it did not fix

Chapter four. But the paper is now where his hands are, not on the other desk.

A composite: the desk, the windows and the setup are drawn from how people actually use VortexFlow, but the person is a stand-in and nothing here is a testimonial. If this is your desk, tell us what we got wrong.
